Open water swimming, scary or amazing? Can it improve your mental health?
Suzie Wheway - open water swimmer, coach, teacher, mum!
Following the dark days of post-natal depression and later a diagnosis of pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder Suzie went back to the water. A place she realises now she’s always been happy in. In the pool at first but then into the open waters of her home ground in the Peak District. Through open water she’s found a place of escape, peace, comfort, challenge, adventure and friendship. She uses the water to manage her mental and physical health and encourages and supports others in doing the same.
Her passion for the water has led her to make a significant life change, swapping a successful career in the environment sector for the life of a swimming teacher, open water coach and triathlon swim venue operator. In her work she hopes to share the benefits she finds from open water swimming with a wider audience through www.peakswim.co.uk.
Suzie has been involved in the development of Swim England’s Open Water Coaching Programme, featured as an advocate for open water swimming for mental health on TV, radio and in print and writes extensively about her experiences at www.openwaterwheway.com.
