Plant Powered Success - Fuelling for triathlon as a vegan athlete
10:15 - 10:45 (Sunday)
Having done her first triathlon in March 2017 for Comic Relief, three months later Sam qualified to represent GB at the Llandudno Sea Tri ITU Qualifier. Then in September, six months after her first tri she came 29th in the 25-29 age group at the ITU World Sprint Championships!
Competing at an elite level is nothing new for Sam, with her first international competition 13 years ago, when aged 16 she represented England in Taekwondo at the World Championships. However, her international martial arts success came much later in 2015 where she won a European silver and World bronze medal. The main difference was her change to a plant based diet in 2014, guided by nutritionist Sylvia Sobota at Nurture Your Body. Which along with her highly focused work ethic, she credits to her eventual success in Taekwondo and quick success in triathlon.
Taking multiple sprint triathlon podium finishes in 2017, including the Beale Beastie, Votwo Dorney, Always Aim High Snowman and Reading triathlon, it’s been a very steep learning curve but one she has been able to quickly adapt to. Harnessing the power and mental toughness from martial arts to take on the challenge of learning three new sports. With a formidable adaption and recovery rate thanks to her plant based diet, along with kit from Zone3 including their award winning Vanquish wetsuit and Activate Plus Trisuit has been a recipe for success. She wants to share this recipe in the hope it can help lead others to success too.
